Gamble House Pasadena, California Wikipedia

game house

The woods, the low and horizontal room shapes, and the natural light that filters through the art glass exterior windows coexist with a relatively traditional plan, in which most rooms are regularly shaped and organized around a central hall. Although the house is not as spatially adventurous as the contemporary works of Frank Lloyd Wright, or even of the earlier New England "Shingle style," its mood is casual and its symmetries tend to be localized. The house is located on a grassy knoll overlooking Pasadena's Arroyo Seco, a broad, seasonally dry river bed.

The piano was designed by the Greenes to blend into the paneling of the room. As the premier casual games portal, GameHouse® offers more games and more ways to play. Interior tours have long been at the heart of the handsome house, which is famous for its woodsy joinery, airy upstairs porches, nature-inspired stained glass, and indoor-outdoor character. GameHouse offers 2,300+ online and downloadable games, consisting of both in-house produced titles (such as the Delicious series) and third party games. "On this tour, your docent will lead an exploration of the house and its history through rooms lined with rare woods, featuring handcrafted details, fixtures, and furnishings designed by the architects and unique to the house." The rooms of the home were built using multiple kinds of woods.

They briefly considered selling it, until prospective buyers spoke of painting the interior woodwork white. In 1966, the Gamble family turned the house over to the city of Pasadena in a joint agreement with the University of Southern California (USC) School of Architecture. The Gamble House was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977.[3][6] Today, two 5th-year USC architecture students live in the house full-time; the selected students change annually. After the acquisition, the GameHouse studio continued operations as a developer, while its games were distributed via RealNetworks, and the GameHouse game portal continued to operate alongside the RealArcade gaming service.

Because of the Gambles’ attraction to the environment, the Greenes designed the house to complement the rustic setting. The house's design reflected the Gambles' love of nature as flowers and trees were brought to the interior—creating pictures in wood, metal, art glass, and semi-precious stone. It has patterned brick paving with planting areas, a large curvilinear pond, and garden walls made with distinctive clinker bricks and boulders. Paths made with large water-worn stones from the nearby Arroyo Seco are reminiscent of running brooks crossing the lawns. The overall landscape design and constructed garden elements are integrated with the architectural proportion and detailing. The triple front door and transom feature a Japanese black pine motif in plated (more than one layer) leaded art glass, highlighting the Asian influence that runs throughout the house.

The third floor was planned as a billiard room but was used as an attic by the Gamble family. David and Mary Gamble lived in the house during the winter months until their deaths in 1923 and 1929, respectively. Mary's younger sister Julia lived in the house until her death in 1943. Cecil Huggins Gamble and his wife Louise Gibbs Gamble lived in the house beginning in 1946.

Across from the fireplace, there is a window that leads to the terrace, which overlooks the garden. The expansive window was designed to let light brighten the room during the late afternoon. At the far end of the room lie bookcases, a small games table, and a piano to offer entertainment and leisure.

In addition to our casual gaming platform, we also have a studio in house, developing casual games series such as Delicious, Fabulous Angela, Heart's Medicine and Mortimer Beckett. These GameHouse Original Stories are available on PC and mobile. The living room was designed without any entry doors so that the room would be as open and inviting as possible. It also consisted of a spacious sitting room, which was decorated with five rugs that were designed by Charles Greene using watercolor.

Teak, maple, oak, Port Orford cedar, and mahogany surfaces are placed in sequences to bring out contrasts of color, tone, and grain. Inlay in the custom furniture designed by the architects coordinates with the inlay in the tiled fireplace surrounds, and the expressed, interlocking joinery on the main staircase was left exposed. The Arts and Crafts Movement in American Craftsman style architecture was focused on the use of natural materials, attention to detail, aesthetics, and craftsmanship. GameHouse is the best way to play thousands of casual PC games, all in one place.

Inside peek-arounds were put on hold early in the pandemic, while outdoor tours gave devotees of the destination a look at the gardens, patios, and all of that charming brickwork. The Greenes used an experienced team of local contractors who had worked together for them in Pasadena on several previous homes, including the Hall brothers, Peter and John, who were responsible for the high quality of the woodworking in the house and its furniture. The Gamble family crest, a crane and trailing rose, was integrated in part or whole in many locations around the house. The Gamble House, also known as the David B. Gamble House, is an iconic American Craftsman home in Pasadena, California, designed by the architectural firm Greene and Greene. Constructed in 1908–1909 as a home for David B. Gamble, son of the Procter & Gamble founder James Gamble, it is today a National Historic Landmark, a California Historical Landmark, and open to the public for tours and events.

Princess Destinations: Repositioning

relocating cruise ships

Repositioning cruises often include fewer port stops and more days at sea compared to traditional cruises, allowing passengers to relax and enjoy the amenities of the ship. These cruises can also offer different itineraries and ports of call than regular cruises, providing passengers with the opportunity to explore new destinations. On many repositioning cruises, you will not get off the ship as often as you might on a typical sailing because there are no ports in the middle of the ocean you're crossing.

Other Posts You May Enjoy:

It should be noted that not all ship movements necessarily include a repositioning cruise, but it is commonly offered as a way to generate revenue for a necessary operation. In addition, it almost always requires you to fly to one port, and then fly home from another. The logistics and price of not doing a roundtrip flight can sometimes ruin any deal offered by the sailing. For example, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines frequently offers such trips between some of its U.K. Fellow British line Ambassador Cruises also offers the occasional shorter repositioning trip between British ports. Alternatively, sail from Southampton, England and you could have a day in both Porto and Lisbon before starting the crossing, breaking the journey in Bermuda.

If you prefer frequent stops and exploring new cities daily, this might be a drawback. Although the fares are lower than comparable cruises, the one-way nature of the trips means additional travel costs. One-way flights are rarely a bargain, so be sure to factor in the cost of air travel (if required) before assessing the value of a deal. Royal Caribbean’s 7-day Boston to Puerto Rico itinerary in November 2025 is also available for under $100 per person, per day. From Rome, you’ll stop at ports such as Toulon in France, Palma de Mallorca, Cartagena, and Malaga before leaving Europe behind.

On July 23, 2020 Carnival announced that Carnival Fascination would be withdrawn from service and placed in long-term layup.

With Transatlantic Cruises, the ship announces a one hour time change every couple days.

Repositioning Cruises: What Are the Positives?

In addition to such rarely-visited destinations, many repositioning cruises also stop at popular cruise ports too. For example, transatlantic repositioning cruises will regularly still include a wide assortment of popular Mediterranean ports, Caribbean ports, or sometimes both! When taking westbound northern transpacific repositioning cruises, the cruise lines have always been generous to form a weeklong Alaskan cruise before crossing the Pacific. But in Spring, as the summer months approach, cruise lines want to move their ships to locations such as Alaska and Europe, both very popular summer cruise destinations. Relocating the ships between these regions can be a costly and time-consuming process. Passengers are able to enjoy the unique lengthy voyages that are created out of the need to move the ships.

Join us as we discover the allure of repositioning cruises, the importance of planning ahead, and the exciting destinations awaiting travelers. Let us set sail together and uncover the wonders that await on the high seas. Sail from one incredible destination to another on one of our luxury repositioning cruises. Spend relaxed days on board one of our luxury cruise ships in the award-winning spa, dipping in the sparkling pool, and tasting world-class culinary creations inspired by global destinations. With plenty of days at sea and stops in some of the most coveted ports in the world, these repositioning cruises promise adventure both on and off the ship.

A good travel policy will help to cover the hundreds of dollars of your shipboard doctor visit if you were to get a cold. Without proper travel insurance, such an unfortunate occurrence would be financially devastating. 💆‍♀️ 6) Enter the Spa Raffle – On most ships, the spa usually has a raffle on the first day of the cruise in which they’ll give away spa passes and free treatments. Find out when it is and then take 20 minutes to listen to their offers and enter the raffle. You may win spa access for the length of the cruise or a treatment during a slow sea day. There are a few things you should consider doing on the first day of any repositioning cruise to help ensure you’ll be comfortable throughout the long voyage.

In order to drum up demand for repositioning sailings, Royal Caribbean often includes special port visits that are not regularly offered. This may mean a visit to a port not usually visited by Royal Caribbean, or a combination of ports on either end of the crossing. Embarking on a repositioning cruise offers a travel adventure far removed from the traditional cruising experience. Sailing across vast oceans from one continent to another at a reduced fare is a tempting prospect, but such trips are not for everyone. Explore our upcoming repositioning cruises and book your next unforgettable voyage today.

These one-way voyages are often sold at discount prices as they are not part of regular sailing schedules. To attract passengers, cruise lines may theme them with topics ranging from food and wine, to theatre, and big band music. Follows the complete list of RCI cruise ships’ one-way relocation itineraries with ports of call (dates of arrival and departure) and prices PP. There is another type of repositioning cruise available that may suit first-time cruisers or people curious about cruising that aren't willing to take a chance on multiple days at sea. By their very definition, they only operate at the very beginning and end of regular cruising seasons, so you’ll never see a repositioning cruise advertised at the height of summer. Because of the high number of sea days, it’s worth studying the cruise ship in detail before you book, as the ship will essentially be your destination.

The island has a strong police presence and a low crime rate when compared to other places in Mexico. In Cozumel, you can swim in the ocean on the western side of the island. However, it’s not advisable to swim on the eastern side due to the rough seas. If you want to learn more about the history of Cozumel, consider visiting the Cozumel Museum. The museum is located along the shore of San Miguel and was previously a luxury hotel. Remember, while the freedom of a rented car is unparalleled, time is of the essence.

Sometimes, ships will have to anchor just offshore if it’s a very busy day with 7 or 8 cruise ships coming in. In these cases the ships will tender passengers to some of the smaller piers near Puerta Maya. There’s a reason it’s one of the most visited cruise ports in the world. Some of the restaurants you will find at the port will become a hive of activity as cruise ship passengers come and go while the ships are docked in Cozumel, Mexico. One highway circumvents the island and along the way are many different points of interest, from beach clubs to Mayan ruins to the Punta Sur Eco Beach Park. While I opted for seafood, including ceviche and grilled fish, my kids were happy to have more familiar American options. During our Royal Caribbean cruise this winter, we decided to book a day at Nachi Cocom Beach Club and Water Sports Center.

If you're feeling especially adventurous, hop on a speedboat to visit the neighboring island of Isla Pasion. This island is a small strip of land and lacks amenities, but could be the perfect off-the-beaten-path beach excursion. Santa Rosa Wall is a drop-off with a depth of 50 to 120 feet located on the southwest part of the island, offering up a myriad of below-the-surface natural marvels. Located at the Punta Langosta pier downtown, there are jewelry stores, high quality souvenir shops, clothing stores as well as Senor Frogs, Hard Rock Cafe, Hooters and Starbucks. For an island that's only 185 square miles, there are a surprising number of ways to get there. The easiest way to reach Cozumel is to fly directly into its airport (CZM).

The largest town in Cozumel is San Miguel, which is also the island’s commercial and cultural hub. Here, you’ll find a bustling waterfront promenade filled with shops, restaurants, and bars. The vibrant atmosphere of San Miguel is a fantastic place to savor the local cuisine, including fresh seafood and traditional Mexican dishes. The pier is approx 1,5 mi / 2,5 km from downtown San Miguel (to the south). The distance is easily walkable (~30 min), and most pleasant as it is along the waterfront promenade.

Around 3 miles south of San Miguel, are the other two cruise terminals - the International Cruise Terminal aka as TMM and Puerta Maya cruise terminal - just a few hundred years apart. Just a half-mile down the beach from the San Francisco Beach Club is Playa Mia. If you want a beach spot with more to do than just lounge or you are traveling with kids, then it’s ideal. There are all the expected beach activities, including snorkeling, swimming, sunbathing, volleyball, and more. There are also a number of exhibitions, including a Mayan art walk through the jungle, the crocodile pen, and a sea lion show.

Entry is only $4, plus you’ll catch views of the waterfront from the rooftop restaurant. You can’t see all of Mexico during your cruise, but this little stop will allow you to at least feel like you did. The tour at Discover Mexico Park will allow you to experience the taste, culture, history, heritage, art, and music of Mexico. There are miniature scale models of famous sites from around Mexico and a tour guide will talk you through some of this country’s most important landmarks.

Brands exist partly because of their repeat customer loyalty, also to offer different levels of quality and services. Corporative shipowners frequently sell, renovate or simply rename their vessels to keep up with the travel industry's trends. River cruise ships carry about a couple hundred passengers, and the vibe is generally more low-key than on mainstream cruises. Daily activities -- if offered -- focus on cultural experiences, such as wine tastings or history lectures, and evening entertainment is more adult-oriented and mellower than on bigger cruise ships. Chances are fellow cruisers will be couples rather than families with children in tow.
